WORDS WITH A WISEGUY 25 ...

Hello! Thanks for signing up for the blog! If you want to read any of the previous blogs, I usually put them on my website www.travelwithawiseguy.com a couple weeks after I email them here. If you know anyone who might be interested, please have them email me (jwise@goshockers.com) to be added to the list. If you want removed from this list just reply to this email – no hard feelings!

I’M STARTING A 2ND CHANNEL – AM I CRAZY?

Why would I want to do that? Haha hear me out. I’ve had lots of people tell me my channel should be much larger and more successful, which I really appreciate. And I’m super thankful for the over 70,000 subscribers we’ve gained through the years. But one of the things that has probably held my channel back from becoming larger is that I like to make all kinds of different videos. Why would that hold it back? Because YouTube rewards channels that have a consistent theme with similar type videos each and every time. So when I do a ghost town video, followed by a dead mall video, followed by museum video … YouTube doesn’t know who to suggest my videos to. So this 2nd channel is just a little housekeeping of sorts so I can keep my main channel as a home for road trips, small towns, ghost towns, and the 2nd channel will be everything else that doesn’t fit into that category – museums, interviews, caves, dead malls, etc.

HERE’S THE PLAN

The 2nd channel is called Wiseguy TOO! And I’ll release our normal TOOSDAY videos there. The main Travel with a Wiseguy channel will continue to have videos on Thursday and Sunday. So really it’s the same as it is now with three videos per week, with one of them on this other channel so the main channel won’t confuse that pesky YouTube algorithm. I’ve started moving older videos over to the Wiseguy TOO! already so it will have a library to get things started. For now I’m still releasing all three weekly videos on the main channel. Sometime this summer I’ll start with the new TOOSDAY videos on Wiseguy TOO! I don’t think of this as a “lesser” channel, in fact I’m hoping it can grow to be significant as people will more easily find videos on those topics. I love showcasing museums, malls, underground places, etc. so hopefully this idea will pan out.

HOW YOU CAN HELP!!!

I rarely ask people to subscribe to my channel, but you can be a huge help to hit the free subscribe button on Wiseguy TOO! https://www.youtube.com/@Wiseguy_TOO

I’d like to get this channel up to the minimum number of subscribers to be monetized (1000). That way when I make the change this summer I won’t lose much revenue in the process. If you want to be notified whenever there is a new video make sure to hit the “all” button when you subscribe. Thanks so much!!!

YOUTUBE MARCH RECAP

As you may know I’m deep in the middle of the track and field season (I coach track at Wichita State), so I’ve been super busy lately. March is a bit of a break between the indoor and outdoor seasons, and I was able to make a few local trips. I went to Oklahoma twice as well as a couple days in western Kansas. I’ve been doing several Route 66 videos this year in conjunction with the 100 year anniversary of the Mother Road. It’s been a lot of fun, and people seem to always enjoy the Route 66 road trips. After one of those trips I went to southwestern Oklahoma and spent a couple days in the Lawton area. My grandfather lived in Lawton when I was little and visiting him was the first time I had ever been to the “west”. I grew up in Ohio and Oklahoma seemed so exotic! It was nice to go back again last month and there are a lot of other places down that way I’d like to visit next time. My trip to western Kansas was also a lot of fun. I did a video on the “ghost county” of Garfield County that fell victim to a county seat war and being too small for the requirements of being a Kansas county. Finding remnants of the ghost town of Ravanna was something I finally checked off my bucket list. That was fun!

APRIL … SO FAR

April and May are very hectic for me and making videos during this time takes a lot of planning and being efficient with my time. I’m pretty much relegated to exploring places near where we have track meets, so I spent a day in the Kansas City and western Missouri area as well as a day exploring around NW Arkansas. Videos from those trips will be coming up on the channel in the next couple weeks. This weekend I will fly to Eugene, Oregon, with our team to compete in “Track Town, USA”, which is always a special place for track and field. Hopefully I’ll be back there in June for the NCAA Championships. I’m not sure if I’ll have time to film while in Oregon, but I’m hoping to get up early and find something interesting if possible.

VIDEO 600 COMING UP

It’s crazy to think I’m getting ready to post my 600th long form video next week! I’m really excited for this one as I interviewed Joe Evans from Joe & Nic’s Road Trip. I’m sure many of you are fans of his channel as he has over 700k followers and has been incredibly successful on YouTube. We had a great 45 minute chat that I think you’ll love. Look for 600 next Tuesday, April 21!

WANT EVEN MORE CONTENT? BECOME A MEMBER TODAY!

If you’re not aware, I also have a member section of the channel, where you can get extra content every week. We call it Member Mondays! We’re up to over 200 members, and they are the first to know about what’s going on with the channel and where I’ve been exploring. We have a lot of fun with these videos, and I like to show a lot of sneak peaks and behind-the-scenes clips. The support goes a long way in helping the channel continue to grow! If you are interested you can learn more on my website: https://www.travelwithawiseguy.com/membership

WANT TO SEND ME SOMETHING?

Sometimes I get asked for my address so someone can send me something. I always show my gifts in the member videos. If you want to send something my address is: John Wise, PO Box 2793, Wichita, KS, 67201.

THAT’S ALL FOLKS!

Thanks for reading my ramblings!

If you enjoy my channel and want to help it grow, feel free to share videos to your friends and/or family! I also have Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter/X (Instagram is probably the best to follow, links below). Oh yeah buy some merch! (but only if you want). Info for everything can be found on my website: https://www.travelwithawiseguy.com/

Thanks for all the support and we’ll see you down a backroad!

John Wise
